Tokyo, Japan – Toyota Motor Corp. is developing an electric van-like vehicle for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo. The Accessible People Mover (APM) could offer hints at where the company plans to take electric vehicle (EV) technology.
The APM offers a last-mile solution to transfer athletes and staff to venues and to move visitors with accessibility needs such as the elderly, people with impairments, pregnant women, and families with small children.
During the Games, Toyota will employ approximately 200 of the APMs, which will support the transportation of the visitors and staff to and around various facilities, including places where events or competitions will be held and non-event official sites such as the Olympic Village.
APM is a low-speed, short-distance battery electric vehicle (BEV) that will feature three-row seating. Changing seating configurations will allow it to transport wheelchair-using athletes and visitors or to accommodate a stretcher and medical professionals for ambulance-like service.
